Savannah, Georgia

Day 2:
Savannah, Georgia to Spartanburg, South Carolina
9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
320 miles

We wanted to see Savannah and all that it had to offer, but didn't want to spend all day there.  So we went on a bus tour.  It was really informative and interesting.  Savannah is rich in history.  It was full of beautiful buildings, parks and monuments dedicated to history.
I don't remember what all the pictures are of, but it is so green and beautiful.

George Washington gave speeches in this park.  Amazing to think of being in the same spot as he was so long ago.

This water spout was pretty cool

An owl face!

The cemetery would have been neat to go through.  The headstones are very old.  Some of them had been vandalized by soldiers that were stationed in Savannah.  They got bored and changed some of the dates.
We also learned that many people were buried and reburied.

I think this was the orphanage where Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's, was raised.
This is a crooked house that pirates lived in.

This is the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, who founded the Girls Scouts of America!  It is the Girl Scouts' 100 year anniversary.  In honor of this, they made a new cookie this year, Savannah Smiles.

This church was built by slaves.  It housed the Underground Railroad beneath the floors.  The slaves drilled holes in the floor so they could breathe.  It was done in a pattern so that it looked like it was for decoration.  It amazed me to be in the same place that slaves fought for freedom.
The bus drove down this original cobble stone road.  It was a little bumpy!

The trees are so tall there, the billboards have to be taller!

This is the state symbol of South Carolina. The crescent was originally on a banner a long time ago.  The tree is the palmetto palm tree.  In a major battle in the Revolutionary War, the South Carolinians defeated the British because their fort was built out of Palmetto wood.  The soft wood just absorbed the cannon balls instead of knocking the walls down.

State number 3!  South Carolina.
We spent the morning in Savannah, then moved on to Sebastian's house.  He was a neighbor in Summit Place and graduated from Wolford four months before Brent.  Sebastian was a great support and very encouraging for Brent.  He is a great guy. This is the road to his house.  Very wooded and green. We had a good visit, then headed to the hotel and for dinner.
Just one of the many dinners and lunches on the road.  The kids got tired of chicken nuggets and hamburgers.  Although we ate a variety of food, the kids' menu was usually the same.
It was nice to be able to get two hotel rooms.  That way everybody got a bed and Wes got the cot.  It helped with getting a break from each other too.  The girls liked it when they could be in Grandma and Grandpa's room!
Dad:  Were you good in Grandma and Grandpa's room?
Kara: Ummmmm.  We were playing.
