Beautiful Oregon Coast

Every time I get on to blog, to catch up, I feel overwhelmed at the next set of pictures.  We loved our trip to Oregon.  Word can't really express the beauty we saw.  Or the love we felt!  This will be a birthday that will be cherished for a lifetime.  So I tried to limit the pictures.  There are still a lot.  But I want to make sure it is documented properly.
Our first view of The Pacific Ocean!!!
Melanie had her camera, so unfortunately I am in some pictures.
We were able to see three different lighthouses on our trip down the coast.  Pretty cool.  I love light houses.
This one is Yaquina Bay.

We hit the town of Newport for some lunch.
Being on the Coast we had to have seafood! We stopped at Mo's which was very tasty. We had fish and chips.  The fresh, yummy, good kind!

They had a garage door for the front windows.
The girls enjoyed their shark infested drinks.
We tried calamari.  Janiel didn't like it.  I didn't mind it since there was more batter than squid.
Then it was onto the next lighthouse!  Yaquina Head.  It was closed for tours, but still magnificent!

There were thousands of birds!  They just flocked to the islands and floated in the water. It was amazing.  The noise of all the birds was fascinating as well.

Janiel and Macey brought their animals along for the ride.  What cute girls.
The flowers were so beautiful too.
Our next stop was to Cobble Beach.  It was amazing.
From a distance it kind of looks like any other beach (well not Naples...).
But there was a distinct rumble.

But the beach is made up of millions of cobble stones.  They were formed from volcanic rock.  But they are tumbled from the waves making them smooth and round. They would make a rumbling noise as the waves pushed them up and they tumbled back down again.
They were so warm on bare feet!
The girls climbed down and had a hard time climbing back up. They would slip and slide.
 Pretty amazing!

The girls liked how they different when they were wet and dry.
Our next stop was to the sea lion caves. It is a place where the sea lions come to breed and have their babies.  It was pretty neat.  Brent had gone there as a kid and remembers it vividly.  It was a different season, so we saw a differnt sight.

As if we didn't do enough walking, the girls needed to release energy and slide the rails as well.
We walked down a trail and there they were.  We could smell them and hear them before we could see them.  They were all crammed on a ledge.
Or there were some swimming as well.

If you look closely, there are a few balanced on the rock!
A video of the noise...too bad you can't smell as well.
Then we rode an elevator down to the cave.  This is a view out the side of the cave.  It is the Heceta Lighthouse.
This is a picture of inside the cave.  Brent said when he went (and when Melanie and family went a couple of weeks before) the cave was packed with sea lions.  But they were all out on the ledges.  There were only two grown sea lions and a baby.
This is off of their website.  It was pretty fun to learn about.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves:

Our next stop was Stonefield Beach.
Ready to begin their adventure.

There were tide pools with a lot of critters to explore.
This is a list of things to see in the tide pools.  I'm sure we saw most of them!!!

  • Cnidarians (sea anemones)
  • Molluscs (mussels, snails, limpets, chitons and maybe even an octopus!)
  • Arthropods (crabs and barnacles)
  • Echinoderms (sea stars and urchins)
  • Fish (tidepool sculpins)
  • Birds (gulls, oystercatchers, shorebirds)
  • Algae (seaweed, kelp)
  • Marine mammals (seals, sea lions)
  • Tunicates (sea squirts)

 Crabs...

When you step on these they would squirt.
 Giant Green Anemone

 Shells and barnacles

  Star fish

The adventurers!  They would go ahead.  Then say, "Come here!  There is something cool!"  So we would trudge along to see.  Then we would repeat!  It was so fun.

They found some soft sand stone.  So they added their mark.

Then we played on the beach for a little bit.  But it didn't involve swimsuits, umbrellas or buckets.  Too cold!

Dipping my toes.  That is about all that is possible.  It amazing the difference between Florida's water and Oregon's water!

Macey's bum shows how much fun we had!
We drove back up the coast.  Stopped at McDonalds for dinner.
I'm getting rid of the evidence.  Yummy.
A big thank you to Melanie for showing us such a wonderful day.  It was full of beauty.
I am amazed at the beauty of the earth.  I have seen beautiful mountains, sunsets on the beach, green coasts, amazing plants and animals.  Heavenly Father does love us.  He has given beauty for our enjoyment.
