Since Brent is done with school and passed his national board exam, he has had more time on his hands. Yippee!!! The process to become credentialed takes a long time. It takes passing tests, getting licenses, paying lots of money, sending copies of this and that, filling out and signing lots of papers and paying more money. His bosses figured he would be able to work mid August. So this left us with some time. No money, but time.
We figured there were a few things that we would want to do before Brent started work and the kids went back to school. Arches National Park was on that list.
We had one spot in the end of July to do this. I am sure glad that we did.
The view on the drive was beautiful in itself. We passed green mountains and windmills.
Then it started turning more brown with plateaus.
Then it pretty much lost any green growth.
We ate lunch at a park in Green River, then headed to the Arches for an afternoon of hiking.
Our first hike was called Park Avenue (1/2 mile). I think it is because the rocks look like buildings.
We just did a small portion of this hike. It is a one-way hike and we hadn't planned on going too far on this one.
Our next hike was to Balanced Rock (.3 miles). It is a neat formation with a rock perfectly balanced on top of another.
The kids all had fun climbing and hiking.
Heading back after the balanced rock.
Our next stop was Double Arch (.5 miles).
Brent said this is where part of Indian Jones was filmed.
It was pretty neat to see the Double Arch. The kids especially loved climbing on this one. It was nice that it was shady here.
It is nice when brother and sister can hang out together.
A silhouette of the kids in the arch.
What strong girls to hold up the rock.
Next we did a group of arches. This hike was a mile and included the North Window.
The Turret Arch
And the South Window.
North and South Windows
After we had our fill of hikes and heat, we decided it was time to find some dinner. We ate some pizza and headed back to our hotel. On our way, we saw on the map that there were some petroglyphs. We decided it would be worth our time to see them. They were pretty neat!!!
It was a very hot day. We drank a lot of water, hiked a lot of miles, and saw some amazing sites! The trail map said we hiked 2.3 miles this day. But as much as the kids climbed up and around arches, I'm sure they hiked a lot more than that!
